Against all odds, a 12-week-old Chihuahua survived more than two days lost in the woods with a BBQ fork stuck in his head, in London, Kentucky.
Smokey was the victim of a freak accident over the weekend when owner Hughie Wagers' BBQ fork snapped in half and the 3-inch long metal prongs went flying through the air and landed in Smokey's head. In shock, Smokey ran into the woods and remained hidden until he was found days later.
Then Smokey was rushed to the Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital where Keaton Smith, DVM, did an emergency surgery to remove the the BBQ fork.
An X-ray showed the prongs had missed Smokey's optical nerves, but was lodged in his brain. The removal took only 30 seconds but was a risky procedure where Smokey's life was given a 50-50 chance for survival.
Now Smokey is home and on the road to a full recovery. However, he will be closely monitored for the next six weeks.
