6 Ways You Can Help Animals In Japan

Watching the tragedy unfold in Japan this week has been absolutely devastating and many of us may feel helpless as we sit in the comfort of our homes as tsunami victims are dealing with unimaginable challenges. While the focus in Japan is on helping people affected by the divesting earthquake and Tsunami, many people are also concerned about animals affected by the disaster. Here are six ways you can help, courtesy of The Pet Dish.
1) Donate to Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support. A coalition of three groups - HEART-Tokushima, Animal Garden Niigata and Japan Cat Network, their intention is to keep animal rescue on the agenda, provide shelter space and coordinate some earthquake/tsunami animal rescues.
2) Animal Refuge Kansai is also accepting donations. The organization says they have facilities in place and a team of experienced staff able to deal with traumatized animals.
3) The Search Dog Foundationhas deployed teams to Japan to help search for victims.
4) Donate to Humane Society International. They have deployed disaster response staff to the region and reached out to Japanese partner organizations involved with animal care and rescue to identify where and how best to provide emergency support and veterinary attention.
5) World Vets are preparing the deployment of a first-responder team to carry out an "on the ground" assessment and provide initial aid.
6) Join the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support Facebook page to support animal rescue efforts.

WHEN TO BATHE YOUR DOG

Bathing your dog too often is not good for his skin, so keep it down to when he gets into something greasy, when company is coming, or when he gets to smelling just too darn doggy. If you leave mud on a dog, most of it will dry up and fall off on its own (and with his help as he lays on his back and wiggles around). Obviously, the "mud rubbing" is best done outdoors!

Looking for a pet to bathe? Search here: www.mypetlisting.com

Finding a Lost Pet

It’s every pet parent’s nightmare: Your beloved dog or cat has gotten loose, and you don’t know where he or she is. Don’t panic—there are many steps you can take to locate your little one. Swift action, coupled with major neighborhood networking, will increase the odds of having your furry friend back in your arms! The key is to get the information out to as many people and places as you can, so enlist the help of friends and make sure to involve your entire family in the search effort.
IDs, Please It’s a good idea for all of your animal companions—even indoors-only pets—to always wear a collar with an ID tag. The ID tag should have your name and a current phone number. If you’ve chosen to microchip your pet as a means of permanent identification, keep in mind that microchips are only as good as the information provided to the chip’s company. If you’ve moved or changed your phone number since registering your pet’s chip and forgot to submit an update, please do so as soon as you can.
Hide and Seek
As soon as you notice that your pet is missing, talk to your family members or housemates and ask when they last saw your pet. It’s a good idea to search your home carefully—under beds, in closets, dark places, small places, behind bulky furniture—in case your pet may be hiding or sleeping somewhere. Shaking a food dish, treat jar or favorite toy will sometimes lure animals out of a hiding place.
If you are sure your pet is not in or around the home, take a slow ride or walk around the neighborhood. Ask friends or neighbors if they’ve seen your animal companion; be sure to bring along a recent photo to show them. Check under porches and shrubs, and ask neighbors to check in sheds and garages just in case your pet was accidentally locked in.
Work the Phones
Your first calls should be to all the animal control agencies, shelters (both municipal and private) and rescue groups in your area; one of them could have your pet in custody already. Check in with the bigger shelters daily—and pay your visits in person, if possible.
If there are no shelters close to your home, contact the police.
News Flash
Your next task? Creating a “lost pet” flyer. We recommend sticking with one design, as repeated viewings of a consistent message are more likely to stick in people’s minds. You’ll need to include a lot of info on your flyer, so use your limited space wisely:
- Start with a big, bold headline that people can read from a distance: “LOST DOG” or “MISSING CAT” is fine.
- Under the headline, a photo of your pet would be ideal. Make sure he’s still well-represented after the picture’s been photocopied or printed. List his breed, sex, color, age, weight, distinguishing features, and where and when he was last seen. It is very important that your pet is described accurately.
- Provide your name and two phone numbers; yours, of course, and a friend or family member’s in case you cannot be reached.
Blanket the Neighborhood
With your flyers in hand (and hopefully, a crew of supportive helpers), it’s time to hit the streets. Good places to post your flyers may include:
- Dog runs and parks
- Pet supply stores and pet grooming shops
- Veterinary offices
- Various commercial establishments, such as grocery and convenience stores, gas stations, Laundromats, bars, cafes and restaurants.
- Lampposts and trees. Cover extra heavily the areas where you think your pet was lost, as well as busy commercial and pedestrian sections of your town.
- Around schools, at kids’-eye level. Children can be more observant than adults, especially when it comes to animals.
Note, be sure to ask permission before posting your flyers!
Hit the ‘Net
The Internet was made for networking. Send descriptive emails about your lost pet to your local friends, colleagues and family members, and ask them to pass on the info to anyone they can. Post messages to animal forums and message boards run by groups based in your area—lots of parks and dog runs have online communities.
Don’t Give Up!
This one’s important! And remember that many lost animals have found their way back home.

Face of Defense: Captain Cares for Pets Left Behind

Face of Defense: Captain Cares for Pets Left Behind

By C. Todd Lopez
Army News Service
WASHINGTON, March 16, 2011 – On Jan. 25, Egyptians began protesting against the government of then-President Hosni Mubarak. By Feb. 1, the U.S. State Department had ordered the departure of all nonemergency U.S. government personnel and their families from Egypt.

After many Americans evacuated Egypt, their pets were left behind, but Army Capt. Eric Coulson helped to set up an impromptu pet kennel to care of the animals. Courtesy photo

But not all "members" of the families departed. The four-legged ones stayed behind.
"A lot of people had pets that they really didn't have a good plan for being taken care of in the event of evacuation," said Army Capt. Eric Coulson, who works in office of military cooperation at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo as part of a team that manages nearly $1.3 billion in annual aid to the Egyptian military. "And the vets and the kennels here were kind of overwhelmed."
Coulson's wife, Karen, left Egypt -- but he and the couple's two dogs, Molly and Sayeret, stayed behind. Coulson and a fellow soldier at the embassy, Army Maj. Alavora Roa, teamed up to take care of those pets that were left behind when their owners departed the country.
"We sort of organized an emergency kennel for all the people who didn't have a place to put their animals while they were being evacuated," Coulson said. "We sort of reached out to people we knew had animals."
In all, Coulson and Roa found themselves running an impromptu pet hotel for about 20 animals, scattered among the deserted apartments of their coworkers who had evacuated. The two checked in on their co-workers’ apartments and also stopped in to feed and walk the animals.
One co-worker, Coulson said, had a fairly large roof available on his apartment, and they kept several animals there.
"We consolidated them at the apartment of one of the other persons involved in this -- he has a large roof, and we put them on the roof with some shelter with large water bowls and large food bowls, and we took turns taking them out."
Coulson said the local Purina distributor in Cairo made a generous donation of supplies to keep the kennel operating.
"Most of the people who were leaving told us where to pick up dog food," he said. "The local Purina dealer did give us a couple hundred pounds of dog food, as well as cat litter and cat food. Between what people had and a generous donation from the Purina dealer here in Cairo, we've been able to take care of the animals at minimal expense."
Now, several of the pet owners have come back to Egypt, Coulson said, and some of the pets have been shipped back to their owners. Coulson's pet boarding days eventually will be a distant memory, but the events in Egypt will stay fresh for a while, he said. The speed at which events in Egypt unfolded was thrilling, he said.
"It went from probably about 10 miles an hour to 60 miles an hour in just a matter of days," he said. "It was absolutely interesting to watch -- to be in the middle of history."
The recent events weren't the first time Coulson has been struck by historical change in Egypt. He was just 13 when President Anwar Sadat was assassinated -- old enough to be able to gauge the impact and significance of what had happened.
"That was sort of one of my first big memory of things in the news -- of what we had as far as 'wall-to-wall coverage' back in 1981," he said. "I remember being riveted by the TV.
"The two transitions of power in Egyptian history that have taken place in my life are really sort of important memories to me," Coulson added.

AKC Great Dane Harlequin For Sale

Baby great dane is a beautiful akc harlequin. He comes from lines and lines of champions! He was very carefully breed, and has a beautiful body!

I JUST bought him from a breeder from Chicago and have a sudden job change, and I would really like to find him a great home with someone that has a more stable lifestyle right now.

He does very well with other dogs, just the usual puppy playing! He is on his way to understanding potty training but not there yet - he is still veryyy young! He has A LOT of energy for a dane....he calms down amazingly in his crate, but when he is out he wants to play! He LOVES toys, and would love nothing more then someone who could play with him all day long! He is unsure of the outdoors still, but in time I think he would do well with a big yard to romp around in!

He is going to be a very big boy, and because of his size, and energy, he needs to be with someone who is going to work with him and take him to puppy classes. If you are willing, he is going to make someone a fabulous pet. He is awesome....great markings too!

Dog Bless You

History. Happy 100k. We will never again question what people can accomplish together.

It is time for a few good tears. Of all the things Lucky and I have done together nothing will compare to this.

It's time for a few tears. I hope every single person really takes a moment and appreciates this simple act. Your actions have improved humanity.

Dog Bless Each and Everyone of you.

Prepare for a long-term love affair

"There is this general thinking that cats are no-fuss pets, which couldn't be further from the truth," says Gwen Sparling, owner of Camp Kitty boarding facility in Atlanta. She notes that cats live from 15 to 20 years, which equates to thousands of litter box cleanings as well as other expenses. Annual expenses for veterinary care, food, toys and preventatives also add up quickly. Expect to drop around $1,000 for the privilege of kitty cohabitation. If you're ready to handle the time and financial commitment, it's time to find a match.

What do I do when I have to travel with my dog cat or pet?

tips for traveling with pets
Associated Press
For many pet owners, the idea of a vacation without Fido or Fluffy isn't a vacation at all. But, there are many considerations to take when traveling with pets-from what to pack to where to stay. Here are a few tips and pet friendly hotel chains to make traveling with animals a little easier.

1) Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up to date contact identification. If you're flying, also label your pet's crate. That way, if your pet gets separated from you, someone can contact you

2) Keep a leash on your pet.

3) Keep a copy of your dog's vaccination records in your car (or carry-on if you're flying.)

4) Make sure to bring water and bowls, as well as treats and baggies for picking up after your
dog. Not all rest stops provide them, and they're unlikely at airports.

5) Try to book nonstop flights to reduce the stress of changing planes on your pet.

6) If your animal is prone to carsickness, pack towels and cleaning supplies

7) Don't let your dog ride with its head out the window. Flying dirt and debris can cause eye or ear infections.

8) If your pet is restless in the car, try popping in a kids' movie or CD for ambient noise.

Then there's the matter of your accommodations after arrival. While there are many pet-friendly hotels to be found, make sure you are clear on your hotel's pet policy before you arrive. Many have restrictions on the size and number of pets allowed in a room, for example, and not all hotels have the same requirements. Also, it doesn't hurt to ask about pet perks-some hotels offer amenities like dog beds, treats, water bowls and even discounts to local dog walkers and groomers.

If you're still looking for a place to stay, websites like www.bringfido.comwww.pet-friendly-hotels.net,www.petswelcome.com allow you to search for pet friendly hotels across the U.S. and around the globe.

Is it Safe to Kiss Your Pet?

We’ve all done it, or at least know someone who has. Animal lovers who kiss their pets — mouth to mouth. “Kisses” from mans’ best friend or a feline companion may seem loving and irresistible, but is it safe?
There are many myths surrounding pet smooches. Some believe a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human mouth, others think their dog or cat’s mouth is a disinfectant and has no germs at all — which, considering how pets clean themselves, can probably be considered untrue right off the back.
We asked Dr. Paul Maza, co-director of the health center at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, how close is too close when it comes to your pet?
“Many of the different types of bacteria in dogs and cats are the same type of bacteria as in humans. At any given point in time they are probably not any dirtier than ours,” Maza said.
In fact, Maza said if owners practice oral hygiene on their pets, like with brushing their teeth, a pet’s mouth can actually be even cleaner than a human mouth.

How do animals reproduce?

The vast majority of animals use sexual reproduction to reproduce. Sexual reproduction involves two parents, a male and a female who combine egg and sperm. There is also asexual reproduction, where an organism multiplies or produces an off spring without a mate. Bacteria, for example, goes through binary fission, where it makes an identical copy of its cell, or multiple fission, where there is more than two offspring.

What is the fastest land animal?

Fastest Land Animal

The cheetah is considered the fastest land animal and is able to achieve speeds upwards of 70 miles per hour. It cannot, however, maintain this speed for very long, and prey that has a bit of luck can "wear down" the cheetah by avoiding it for about 10-15 seconds.

The cheetah might be considered the quickest of land animals, too. It can reach speeds between 112 km/h (70 mph) and 120 km/h (75 mph) in short bursts up to about 460 m (500 yards), and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h (68 mph) in three seconds - faster than most supercars.
So, simply put, the cheetah!

Actually

Whilst the Cheetah may be the fastest running animal reaching speeds of up to 75 mph its speed of movement is belittled in comparison with the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake with documented strike speeds of 175 mph.

When the snake strikes it's victim it reaches it's top velocity from a complete standstill. This is not a sustained velocity, but neither is that of the Cheetah. This is to be expected as when you are looking for the fastest moving land based animal you should expect to see this achievement over a short distance. A snake striking certainly qualifies as fast movement.

What is the smallest animal on earth?

Strictly speaking, the smallest animal in the world would be an amoeba. Amoebas are unicellular organisms, which means they are comprised of only a single cell and are classed in the animal kingdom under Protozoa. So, technically speaking, Amoebas are actually animal-like protists classifed in the kingdom Protista, and thus not animals.

However many people do not consider these to be "living creatures", despite their inclusion in the animal kingdom. The other smallest animals, in order of there size, are:
The smallest insects are the male parasitic wasps. They measure only 139 micrometers in length. The females are around 40% larger than the males. These are the smallest animals, when amoeba and the like are not included.

The smallest beetle belong to the Nanosellini tribe. They all measure less that 1mm in length. The smallest in Scydosella musawasensis at 300 micrometers long.
The smallest animal with a backbone is a species of fish, known as Stout Infant Fish. It measures just about 7mm in length and is found in Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
The smallest amphibians are the Monte Iberia Eleuth and the Brazilian Gold Frog. Both measure around 9.6mm to 9.8mm in length.
The smallest reptile is the Jaragua Sphaero, also called Dwarf Gecko. It measures 16mm long.
The smallest bird is Bee Hummingbird, as the measure around 5 cm in length.
The smallest mammal is Kitti's Hog-nosed Bat, also known as the Bumblebee Bat. It is found in Thailand and it only measures 30mm to 40mm.

Trendy pet diet sparks online demand for wild game

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Feeding Fido or Fluffy a raw, all-natural cuisine could land you in the slammer for up to six months if you're not careful where you buy the deer, duck or other meat.

The trendy pet diet, called "prey model," in which owners try to feed their pets critters similar to what they'd hunt in the wild, has resulted in a surge in illegal sales of raw wild game online, Florida wildlife investigators say. read more

Miracle Dog

Against all odds, a 12-week-old Chihuahua survived more than two days lost in the woods with a BBQ fork stuck in his head, in London, Kentucky.
Smokey was the victim of a freak accident over the weekend when owner Hughie Wagers' BBQ fork snapped in half and the 3-inch long metal prongs went flying through the air and landed in Smokey's head. In shock, Smokey ran into the woods and remained hidden until he was found days later.
Then Smokey was rushed to the Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital where Keaton Smith, DVM, did an emergency surgery to remove the the BBQ fork.
An X-ray showed the prongs had missed Smokey's optical nerves, but was lodged in his brain. The removal took only 30 seconds but was a risky procedure where Smokey's life was given a 50-50 chance for survival.
Now Smokey is home and on the road to a full recovery. However, he will be closely monitored for the next six weeks.

Take Pets When Evacuating In Face of Possible Tsunami

Pet owners should have an emergency plan that includes the safety of their animals, and always be informed about the potential for evacuation in their area.
This emergency supply kit should include:
  • Three-or-more-day supply of food in airtight, waterproof container, and drinking water.
  • Bowls for food and water.
  • Current photos and physical description of your pets, including details on markings.
  • Medications, vaccination records and pet first aid supplies.
  • For dogs include: leash, harness and a sturdy carrier large enough to use as a sleeping area.
  • For cats include: litter and litter box and a sturdy carrier large enough for transport.
